Artist Statement

Bini Sebastian is a visual artist, born in India and raised in Dallas, TX. She moved to Columbia to pursue her doctoral studies in counseling psychology and quickly found that her interest is visual art and creative expression overlapped with identities as a student, therapist, and educator. As an artist, Bini is inspired by her Indian culture, non-duality, the magical & natural world, and the human aspiration towards the True & Higher Self. She hopes to integrate her academic and artistic identities in the name of mind-body-spirit healing of herself and others.

“What a journey from thinking I did not have a creative bone in my body to embodying "artist" in multiple senses of the word - a journey filled with doubt, self-criticism, and disembodiment. Glad that is over. Well, is it ever really "over"? I’m always learning how to let my talent guide the strokes, let my emotions guide the content, and let my faith guide the process.

Humbled and happy to have my own online art space, standing more comfortably in a soft spotlight. Although I'm becoming more familiar with and appreciative of the light that surrounds me, I have to place my intimacy with my “dark side” as my muse. Creating art allows me to paint my pain, fears, & insecurities onto a canvas, so that I may walk towards them with the sturdy weapon that is my paintbrush. Through this process, I find new ways to tap into the innate human capacity for healing.

As such, much of my work reflects my spiritual journey in overcoming intrapersonal, sociocultural, and systemic obstacles, as you'll see in my emphases on nature, culture, identity, death, suffering, and transcendence. It is my hope that, by viewing my work, you further feel into a sense of liberation and the truth that we are all connected.”
